Lions and Tigers and Internets, Oh My!

Africam.com ScreenshotAfricam.com broadcasts a live web cam from the Nkorho Pan, Africa, straight to your information station. For most people, the experience can be joyously observed from the their website, however Apple users have been thrown to the lions (slight pun intended), as the embedded Windows Media Player stream does not work on a Mac. That is, until now….

Non-Mac users can also view the Africam feed on Wavelit.com here

UPDATE: Though the official Africam still works, Wavelit, the stream providers, have blocked my website requests from their servers, therefore my OS X fix no longer works. Too bad, considering they still haven’t fixed their feed to be OS X compliant. That having been said, please contact me if you would like to set up your own Africam feed ( africam [at] srobbin.com), or voice your displeasure to Africam themselves (info@africam.com). Hopefully, between these two actions, we’ll be able to bring Africam back to the Mac community.

UPDATE 2: Reader Rodd Perry writes, “I got it [Africam on OS X] to work. If you open windows media player 9 in OSX and click on check for upgrades, there’s a download for a component called flip4mac. Once you’ve installed and restarted it opens the stream as a quicktime movie. I haven’t figured out how to make it fullscreen though.”

Note: Please be patient. It takes a while for the stream to buffer.

Double Note: During the wee hours of the morning (consider the time zone differences), they’ve got night vision running, so prepare yourself to be somewhat underwhelmed by black and white images. Though, if you come back during the day, you’ll be awash in the colory goodness of the African sun.
